My Contribution to a Landmark Book on Education in Africa

I am excited to share a proud milestone in my academic journey. I recently contributed to the newly released book titled Tackling Grand Challenges in Education in Africa in the Context of Emerging Technologies, edited by the distinguished Professor Emeritus Peter A. Okebukola, OFR, who also happens to be my PhD supervisor and mentor. This important volume was published in honour of Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, former Honourable Minister of Education of Nigeria, and it brings together leading scholars to address the pressing challenges facing education in Africa while exploring opportunities offered by emerging technologies.
My contribution appears as Chapter 51: Integrating the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA) in Visual Art Education in Nigeria. In this chapter, we investigated how the Culturo-Techno-Contextual Approach (CTCA); a teaching method that blends culture, technology, and local context, can transform the teaching and learning of Visual Art. The study involved 57 first-year Fine and Applied Arts students across two institutions in Lagos State, and the results showed a statistically significant improvement in student performance when CTCA was applied compared to traditional lecture-based teaching.
This research demonstrates the power of CTCA in making art education more engaging, culturally relevant, and effective for Nigerian students. It highlights how connecting culture to learning, leveraging technology, and emphasizing local context can improve academic achievement while nurturing creativity, innovation, and critical thinking skills essential for Africa’s future.
Contributing to this book is a deeply fulfilling milestone. It represents not just research, but a commitment to shaping the future of education in Nigeria and across Africa. I am grateful to Professor Okebukola for his mentorship and to my co-authors for their collaboration. This book is more than a scholarly collection, it is a roadmap for tackling Africa’s educational challenges in the era of emerging technologies.
